A learning-centered syllabus is one that communicates high expectations for student learning. This shifts the focus away from a simple list of classroom "rules," and instead prepares the student for a successful learning experience. The primary purpose of the syllabus is to help students understand what the course is about, why it is being taught, what the students will learn, and what will be required to pass the course. When it comes to creating a course syllabus, more is better!
The first step in creating a learning-centered syllabus is to provide in writing all of the information that a student will need in order to be successful in your course. It not only contains policies and expectations, but also serves as a “roadmap” or “how to guide” for optimal learning in your classroom.
When preparing a learning-center syllabus, consider the following questions:
